The World Schools Debate
The World Schools Debating Championships (WSDC) is a truly global competition for high school debaters, similar to the Olympics or World Cup. It is held annually and involves more than 70 national teams. Teams from all over the world gather in a battle of minds, discussing a variety of different topics from international relations to economics and sport.
Promoting excellence, creativity and, crucially, critical thinking, WSDC is not only a competition but a forum for the best and the brightest of students. The format combines rigorous argumentation, teamwork, research and public speaking at the highest global standard. Participation in WSDC opens doors to international universities, scholarships and global networks. TCRO serves as Tanzania’s pathway into this world. Through national qualifiers, training programs and talent development, we identify and prepare students to compete with the very best on a global scale.
The history of World Schools Debate and TCRO’s role in WSDC in East Africa
TCRO organized the first ever WSDC competitions in both Tanzania and Kenya. For Tanzania, the 2016 edition of the Mwalimu Nyerere Schools Invitational Debate Championship was the first in Tanzania and the 2019 Kenyan version for the first ever recorded in Kenya.
We are not the first nation to participate using the debate format in East Africa as Uganda and Rwanda have a longer history dating back to 2008, however we have set new trends in the space that have sparked new movements. Our involvement in WSDC has had an effect on how seriously people take WSDC in East Africa as we have added an international element that didn’t exist before. We continue to host the most well attended WSDC competition by country count, not only in the region but the continent.
